Living with your host family in France

Host families in France will supply au pairs with accommodation, food and pocket money in return for childcare and light household chores, including helping to prepare meals. Most tasks undertaken by an au pair will be related to the children.

Some FAQs about becoming an au pair in France

How many hours per week will I work as an au pair in France?

Au pairs in France will usually work between 30 to 35 hours per week with 1.5 days off per week. Hours will be scheduled according to the host family’s requirements and may change depending on the day of the week.

You will also receive 1 week’s paid leave, every six months.

What will I earn as an au pair in France?

The au pair is paid pocket money of between €80 and €100 per week. The amount will be agreed in advance. Most families will also pay towards French language school tuition.

How do I know if I am eligible to become an au pair in France?

To become an au pair in France, you must meet the following criteria:

Must be aged between 18 and 27 (or older if you come from the EU)
Must have experience with children, in at least two different families
Must have graduated from high school
Must be able to swim
Must have a basic knowledge of French
Must have studied French in the past three years (for non-EU members only)

Please note: if you are from outside the European Union, you will need a visa to be an au pair in France.
